Here are a few tricks and techniques to bear in mind, in order to get the most from your mobile video phone.
Small Screen – Big ideas.
Just because you're filming it on a small screen, doesn't mean that's how it's always going to be seen. So don't let it limit your ambition - think big.
In the frame
Avoid wide shots, and try and keep your characters close, and in the centre of the screen, especially when using a mobile video phone.
Steady as she goes
Nothing looks worse than a jerky shot. So when you're shooting, make sure you're resting on something solid, and keep it steady.
Pan-tastic
Most cameras do not handle really quick pans. This means that, if you do a quick pan, the image is going to come out all jerky, or blurry. If you use pans, take them nice and slow and smooth. Using a tripod for this movement is recommended.
Break the rules
Hey, you're already using a mobile to shoot a movie. Why not go the whole way and do it all differently? Shoot from your bike, strap your mobile to your rollerblades, tie it to a helium balloon for overhead shots. Make each shot visually exciting… Think angles, think background, location, composition, lighting.
Audio
Avoid noisy locations (unless that is what you want).
Filming
When shooting your film allow 3 seconds of footage before and after your action to facilitate good editing and to allow the use of transitions.
Continuity
And last but certainly not least is Continuity. Here the devil is in the detail! When shooting if you pause between shots it is important to understand and remember what the action and or person was doing, especially if you plan on shooting the scene from multiple angles. Wardrobe, eye line, and lighting continuity are very important in creating the filmic illusionâ€
